However, current RNAV applications do not exploit the full spectrum of aircraft/navigation performance capabilities provided by the equipment of some operators. Where the use of these advanced capabilities allow for more efficient routings, a reduction to Decision Altitude (DA) of at least 50 feet, a decrease in visibility by at least ¼ mile, or lateral/vertical paths that would otherwise be unavailable, instrument approach procedures (IAP) may be constructed under the Required Navigation Performance (RNP) Special Aircraft and Aircrew Authorization Required (SAAAR) criteria contained in this document. This directive is written for the use of IAP developers. It provides the tools to construct the Obstacle Evaluation Areas (OEAs) and evaluate the Obstacle Clearance Surfaces (OCSs) associated with an RNP SAAAR approach procedure.
